Time for another Rebrand of this Blog

So last week, I had a lot to say, but that's also been a result of being remiss about blogging and sharing my thoughts.  This week, while working on my first newsletter article for the Quincy Quill. I decided that this blog is need of a new nickname, Adventures with Pastor Andrew, which will coincidentally be the same title of my article.  So, I figured it's time to re-brand this blog yet again.  I'm still all about bringing hope and light into this world where darkness can easily take hold, but also want to expand onto places where we can talk about this adventure called life and how our faith can intersect with life.

I'm eagerly awaiting the day I move up to Quincy and the day I take the helm as pastor of Community United Methodist Church.  That alone is an adventure in itself, along with the many outdoor opportunities and places to explore.  But, also the people I get to meet and the people we get to know.  And I could not have asked for a more beautiful setting than Quincy.  As I was writing my first article, I reflected upon the words of Psalm 139:
If I take the wings of the morning    and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me,    and your right hand shall hold me fast. (Psalm 139: 9-10, NRSV)

I'm eagerly awaiting to take the wings of the morning, consider I have been getting up early every day, although Quincy is far from the ends of the earth.  Even in the challenges that will also be ahead, God will be with us, walking alongside us and guiding us each step of the way.  With that, the packing and sorting, as well as getting household goods begins in earnest, as we take the wings of the morning and seize the day!!

Lenten Ruminations

Usually, I have used this space to post my weekly sermons and monthly newsletter articles, although this year for Lent, we did a series about rehab at Community UMC and because of the highly personal nature of the stories shared in the series, chose not to post the sermons from Lent this year.   We began our time of Lent in the wilderness, reflecting on the things that tempt us and where we too may find ourselves in the wilderness.  We then talked about our need for intervention, whether it's God intervening, or people who love us so much that they intervene to keep us from doing harm to ourselves or others.  The third week, we talked about working the program, linking The Ten Commandments to how we work the program of our faith, but how we may have had to work the program through therapy or 12-steps, etc..  We then heard a powerful story about recovery, thinking about how we can make it through some of the challenges life throws at us, ultimately leading to promise as we awai

Community UMC, Quincy, CA “Where Do We Begin?” Pastor Andrew Davis July 3, 2016 Luke 10: 1-11, 16-20         It feels so much like Christmas Morning. - You know, that feeling when we were all children?  No matter how late we went to bed, we still woke up early on Christmas Day with that sense of anticipation, just waiting to see what was laying beneath the Christmas tree, or what waited in our stockings on the fireplace mantle or wherever the stockings were hung. -- Likewise, today also feels like the first day of school, slightly along with that same sense of nervousness of not knowing what to expect, not knowing who will be in the same class, or whether or not you’ll like your teacher. -- I think both feelings can sum up how both of us may feel this morning, this first Sunday together as pastor and people. - We both come into today with a sense of anticipation, a sense of new energy, but perhaps a sense of nervousness as well, - not knowing what to expect from each other
