"Move...in Love" - Sermon, August 26, 2018

Community UMC, Quincy “Move…in Love” Rev. Andrew Davis August 26, 2018 Ephesians 6: 10-20             It is GOOD to be back with you this morning.   These last two weeks, I have literally been on the move from driving to Sacramento, then flying to San Diego, doing a lot of walking in San Diego, flying back to Sacramento, driving back to Quincy for a brief minute, then to Lake Tahoe this past week.   Talk about being on the move!!   Yet amidst the busy-ness of these past two weeks, my mind has been moved too, as I have learned a great deal at the School of Congregational Development and look forward to sharing more with the lay leadership of our church.   Of course, there was a lot I was challenged to think about, especially this last week at Residence-in-Ministry at the Zephyr Point Retreat Center with fellow residents seeking ordination as deacon or elder in the UMC and CA-NV Conference, as we focused on theology and heard some deep, thought-provoking lectures from Dr. C

"Live...in Love" - Sermon, August 12, 2018

Community UMC, Quincy “Live…in Love” Rev. Andrew Davis Ephesians 4: 25-5:2 August 12, 2018 While I have shared this story before, a little over eleven years ago when I was emerging from a spiritual desert, I was still very skeptical about attending church services.   Even though I rediscovered my faith in God after struggling with faith for a time, I didn’t feel like I really needed to go to church to be faithful.   I felt I could believe in God, study scripture, pray and such, except I felt I didn’t need the church in my life.   Being someone who likes to do things by myself, I felt everything was hunky-dory and that life was good.   When I told my mom that I didn’t need the church to be a Christian, she told me otherwise, and as I’ve said before, mother does indeed know best.   The truth was, something was missing in my life and it took that conversation to come to the realization that I really did miss the church; both serving, worshiping, and being together in communi

"Build Up...in Love" - Sermon, August 5, 2018

Community UMC, Quincy “Build Up…in Love” Rev. Andrew Davis August 5, 2018 Ephesians 4: 1-16             This past Friday, I had the honor of officiating my first wedding and am happy to say that everything turned out really well, even though it was a VERY small wedding and none of those whatever could go wrong would go wrong scenarios did not take place.   There was a lot of love in the air both Thursday evening at the rehearsal dinner and in the service itself.   Plus it’s appropriate we talk about love this morning as my parents celebrate their 40 th wedding anniversary today.   Like my parents wedding 40 years ago, our friends had their wedding at the Rio Linda UMC and am glad that there was air conditioning this time around, as my dad mentioned yesterday that on their wedding day, it was 108 degrees outside and there was no air conditioning in the church at that time.   While I could go on and on about love, we are going to be spending a month thinking about what i

"Adventures" for August 2018, from "The Quincy Quill"

At the end of May when summer essentially begins each year, I always find myself asking, ‘where has this summer gone already?’ when the middle of July rolls around.   I’m sure many of you are wondering the same thing too.   Amidst being in the ‘dog days of summer,’ we have a lot to look forward to during the month August with the weekly Farmer’s Market at Dame Shirley Plaza each Thursday until September, and the Plumas-Sierra County Fair August 8-12 and the Fair Parade on August 13 down Main Street at 10:00am.   There’s something special about small towns and the sense of community around such events and I particularly love this year’s fair theme, “Welcome to the Neighborhood.”   With new students arriving to Feather River College this month, and as I see several homes for sale near the church and new people move in, do we take the time to say ‘welcome to the neighborhood’ when we see people we haven’t seen before?   As I’ve been walking to the office most days when the weather i
