Hymn of Praise:                             For the Healing of the Nations – UMH 428

1.    For the healing of the nations, Lord, we pray with one accord;

For a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords;

To a life of love in action

Help us rise and pledge our word, Help us rise and pledge our word.

2.    Lead us forward into freedom; from despair you world release,

That, redeemed from war and hatred, all may come and go in peace.

Show us how through care and goodness

fear will die and hope increase, fear will die and hope increase.

3.    All that kills abundant living, let it from the earth be banned;

Pride of status, race, or schooling, dogmas that obscure your plan.

In our common quest for justice

May we hallow life’s brief span, may we hallow life’s brief span.

4.    You, Creator God, have written you great name on humankind;

For our growing in your likeness bring the life of Christ to mind.

That by our response and service

Earth its destiny may find, earth its destiny may find.[i]

Scripture Lesson:                                    Romans 8: 12-25 (The Message)

12-14 So don’t you see that we don’t owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. There’s nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go!

15-17 This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!

18-21 That’s why I don’t think there’s any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment into the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.

22-25 All around us we observe a pregnant creation. The difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. But it’s not only around us; it’s within us. The Spirit of God is arousing us within. We’re also feeling the birth pangs. These sterile and barren bodies of ours are yearning for full deliverance. That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don’t see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.[ii]

Meditation:                                 “Nothing Can Separate Us: Creation Waits”

Questions for Reflection this Week:

·      Where have you experienced the Spirit throughout creation?

·      When have you experienced the Spirit through those who you’ve walked alongside?

Response:                                             Spirit of the Living God – UMH 393

            Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

            Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

            Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.

            Spirit of the living God, gall afresh on me.[iii]

Moment of Stillness/Pastoral Prayer/The Lord’s Prayer (Altogether):

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Closing Hymn:                                    Every Time I Feel the Spirit – UMH 404

Refrain:

            Every time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart, I will pray.

            Yes every time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart, I will pray.

1.    Upon the mountain, my Lord spoke,

out of his mouth came, fire and smoke.

All around me looks so shine,

Ask my Lord if all was mine.

Refrain

2.    Jordan River runs right cold,

Chills the body not the soul.

Ain’t but one train on this track,

Runs to heaven and right back.

Refrain[iv]
