Leaving the Wilderness

We have made it!!  We have finally reached the end of the wilderness and are now ready to return to life again after forty-plus long days and nights.  I hope that this Lenten journey has been fulfilling, challenging, and inspiring all in the same breath.  I know I can say that it has been one of the most fulfilling journeys I have taken, adding spiritual practices, fasting/modified Daniel Fast (was not perfect, but experienced God's grace), and adding inspirational readings.  But even outside, the starkness of the wilderness and gloom of winter is now giving way to the warmth and bright colors of Spring.  Resurrection is happening all around us.

And tomorrow, we will celebrate our risen Lord, as Jesus conquered death and conquered the grave.  It is a new day for each of us, as by taking the wilderness road to the cross and grave, we too have died to our old ways and are basking in the glow of the resurrection, as we arise to new life in Jesus Christ.  Sure, there has been some grief and difficulty along the way, but by pressing on, we can become a new creation.  Thanks be to God and have a Blessed Easter Day!!

November "Adventures" from "The Quincy Quill"

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful: the Lord God made them all (UMH 147) What a beautiful Fall this has been here in Quincy!!  While the days have been on the warm-ish side, the beautiful colors around us have not disappointed.  While walking to the office from my house, I will often pause to admire the trees behind the courthouse, with their leaves turning orange and gold.  Just a few blocks away, I then see shades of red, as some of the trees look as if they are blazing.  It is a wonderful sight to behold and I can’t but help singing “all things bright and beautiful…” Even amidst the beauty we have around us, my heart breaks for the people of Santa Rosa, the Napa and Sonoma area, Loma Rica, and everywhere where fire has carved a destructive path.  People have lost their homes and other materials, some have lost pets, and as of the writing of this article, over 50 have died.  My heart also breaks for mine and Pastor

Lenten Ruminations

Usually, I have used this space to post my weekly sermons and monthly newsletter articles, although this year for Lent, we did a series about rehab at Community UMC and because of the highly personal nature of the stories shared in the series, chose not to post the sermons from Lent this year.   We began our time of Lent in the wilderness, reflecting on the things that tempt us and where we too may find ourselves in the wilderness.  We then talked about our need for intervention, whether it's God intervening, or people who love us so much that they intervene to keep us from doing harm to ourselves or others.  The third week, we talked about working the program, linking The Ten Commandments to how we work the program of our faith, but how we may have had to work the program through therapy or 12-steps, etc..  We then heard a powerful story about recovery, thinking about how we can make it through some of the challenges life throws at us, ultimately leading to promise as we awai
